Critiquing other people's work can be an exciting and terrifying experience for both people, but it is a neccessary aspect of personal and professional growth. Below is a list the items to bear in mind when performing or receiving a critique.

  1. Always remember to keep it positive and constructive.
  2. What’s the first thing you notice?
  3. What is the subject matter? Meaning could be symbols, actions, anything. What does this photo mean?
  4. Name 3 visual elements and discuss how they are used.
  5. What is the most creative aspect of the image?
  6. Intent, what was the photographer’s intent, and why do you think so?
  7. How does the image make you feel?
  8. When receiving the critique, be open to opinions. You may not always agree, but that's the wonderful part of critiques.
