Travels with Artists
Photographic Workshops

Presents a week in Spain with photographer Daniel Perales & educator Jeannie Hendrick.

HEART OF SPAIN: CASTILLA Y LEON
Future Dates TBA – Sample Program (2005) Listed Below

Your hometown for this workshop will be Covarrubias, a village of the Castilla y Leon region of northern Spain, a short drive from Madrid and close to the bustling city of Burgos. In this walled medieval town on the banks of the gentle Rio Arlanza, the traditions of Spain await you and your camera. Here it seems that time stands still and the immutable character of the Spanish people is virtually unaffected by modern life. Rolling countryside surrounds Covarrubias with ancient monasteries and untouched natural beauty. Shepherds guide their herds through the tiny neighboring villages and down the country lanes., Cattle roam the hillsides, giant sunflowers blanket the rolling countryside and winemakers press their grapes. In a neighboring monastery, the monks perform their famous Gregorian chants in the evening, just as they have done for centuries.

IMPORTANT DEADLINES

THE WORKSHOP
This workshop is for everyone who loves to take photographs. Beginners will learn many new techniques with any kind of camera, the best light, great angles, overcoming  any hesitation in photographing people and more. Veteran photographers will have opportunities to work with Daniel Perales as their guide, to discover exciting subjects and apply proven techniques learned from years of photographing this delightful place and its diverse populace.

Working with Artists invites participants to create a special photographic essay, resulting in a special gift to the people of Covarrubias and a subsequent optional exhibit of photographs in Denver. We’ll practice portraiture, visual perception, and abilities as artists to define cultural and personal experience through the lens. As a group, we will recreate our experiences of Covarrubias and its surroundings in images. Film processing and photographic printing* will be done by a lab in nearby Burgos allowing digital and slide presentations for critiques of the photos during the workshop.

ABOUT YOUR INSTRUCTORS
A professional fine art photographer, Daniel Perales has been an instructor at Working with Artists since 2000, speaking on committees and participating in the WWA salons.  His photographs uniquely define places and personalities and have been included in many important exhibits, including recent participation in Denver’s Public Art Program. An experienced instructor, Daniel has a wonderful ability to inspire creativity and imagination while clearly explaining technical requirements. Daniel has been a part of two distinctive worlds, the United States and Spain.  He was born in Madrid and vacationed in the remote Castilian village of Covarrubias.  Daniel grew up with the town’s way of life, vibrant characters, and rural country landscape. His family had an outsider’s appreciation but an insider’s perspective of this intimate place.  Since his residence in the United States, he has often returned to Covarrubias as a photographer, visits which have shaped his cultural and visual awareness.  Images of the village and other works by Daniel can be seen at www.3peras.com.  Jeannie Hendrick has been involved in education development at the Denver Art Museum and is now working on her Masters Degree.  She taught English as a Second Language in Spain, and has visited Covarrubias many times over the last few years.  Dan and Jeannie were married in “Cova” October 2002.
